Google Experiencing App Services Outage

A range of Google services, including Gmail and Google Docs, were unavailable to customers for more than a half hour Monday morning due to an outage. The services have now been largely restored and are available for most users

Users across the world were unable to access the gamut of Google’s productivity and collaboration tools, which also include Google Calendar, Sheets, Meet and Chat. Customers in Europe appeared to be the hardest hit, according to the Down Detector website, with the outage occurring around lunchtime for those in the UK; users on the U.S. east coast also faced disruption just as the work day was getting started.

The outage was acknowledged by Google at 6:55 a.m. ET; the company said it affected “the majority of users.” The outage was subsequently downgraded to a “service disruption” at 7:31 a.m. ET, with some users still affected.

Google announced that the problem had largely been resolved at 7:52 a.m. ET.

“The problem with Gmail should be resolved for the vast majority of affected users,” Google said on its service status page. It promised to “continue to work towards restoring service for the remaining affected users. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”

Google Boots 164 Apps from Play Marketplace for Shady Ad Practices

The tech giant removes 164 more offending Android apps after banning software showing this type of behavior from the store last year.

Google has removed 164 apps, downloaded a total of 10 million times, from its Google Play marketplace because they were delivering “disruptive” ads, considered malicious.

Last year, the tech giant banned apps that delivered this type of advertising, called out-of-context ads. But the problem continues to plague Google despite numerous efforts by the company to prevent “malicious developers” from submitting their apps to its Google Play marketplace.

Researchers discovered the offending apps mimicking legitimate apps to garner downloads, “only to then trick the user into seeing a whole bunch of unexpected ads,” researchers Gabi Cirlig, Michael Gethers, Lisa Gansky and Adam Sell wrote in a report published by WhiteOps Satori Threat Intelligence Team.

WhiteOps identified the 164 apps, calling them CopyCatz apps, because bulk of those identified attempted to mimic the functions of other popular apps – and spewed the obnoxious ads.

Cloud Attacks Are Bypassing MFA

CISA has issued an alert warning that cloud services at U.S. organizations are being actively and successfully targeted.

The US Federal security are warning that cybercriminals are bypassing multi-factor authentication (MFA) and successfully attacking cloud services at various U.S. organizations.

According to an alert issued Wednesday by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), there have been “several recent successful cyberattacks” focused on compromising the cloud. Most of the attacks are opportunistic, taking advantage of poor cloud cyber-hygiene and misconfigurations, according to the agency.

“These types of attacks frequently occurred when victim organizations’ employees worked remotely and used a mixture of corporate laptops and personal devices to access their respective cloud services,” the alert outlined. “Despite the use of security tools, affected organizations typically had weak cyber-hygiene practices that allowed threat actors to conduct successful attacks.”
